with Fred Espenak (Mr. Eclipse):
"The 2012 Transit of Venus is
your last chance to see what Sir Edmund Halley called the "sight
which is by far the noblest astronomy affords." After this, the
next transit of Venus occurs a century from now in the year
2117.
Of all the eclipse events visible from Earth, the transit
of Venus is the rarest. Steeped in the history of Astronomy,
interest in Venus transits as a means of measuring the
distance to the Sun created an international space race
during the 18th and 19th centuries that carried scientific
expeditions to the far corners of the globe. Similar to
solar and lunar eclipses, Venus transits have their own
Saros-like cycle of repetition that can be used to
understand why they occur in pairs every century or so. I'll
discuss all of this in my special Transit lecture at the
amazing Imiloa Science Center in Hilo. They have a
state-of-the-art planetarium with digital projectors and
full 3-D that can take you to the very edge of the Universe.
I was blown away by the demonstration I had there in 2009.
If you traveled with Spears Travel to Greece for the last
Transit of Venus in 2004
(details), you'll remember what a fabulous trip
we had with awesome views of the transit. I hope you'll join
us in Hawaii for the next and last Venus Transit of the 21st
century."
PS - Don't miss my article on the 2012 Transit of Venus
appearing in the January issue of Sky and Telescope
(available in late November).
