Day
1 - Sept 18 - Arrive Edinburgh Our first day is spent in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. After meeting our group early afternoon, our local guide will take us on an easy paced sightseeing tour of Edinburgh. Its magnificent architecture shifts from the lofty buildings of its medieval old town, as they tumble down the royal mile, to the graceful houses of the Georgian New Town. We visit Edinburgh Castle, the medieval fortress which dominates the
city’s skyline. Perched on an extinct volcano and offering stunning
views, this instantly recognisable fortress is a powerful national symbol,
and part of Edinburgh's world heritage site. We stay in Edinburgh for
three nights. |

Day 2 - Sept 19 - Edinburgh Today, after breakfast we visit the Royal Observatory where we will have an opportunity to see the fabulous Crawford Collection, recognised as one of the worlds leading astronomical book and manuscripts collections. It was the 26th Earl of Crawford's generous gift to the nation of his internationally outstanding collection of astronomical books and instruments. The collection provided the impetus for the construction of the Royal Observatory building, two miles south of the centre of Edinburgh. The observatory developed a reputation as a world leader in astronomy, steadily building an archive of its work. These include the records relating to the greatest Astronomers Royal for Scotland, Thomas Henderson and Charles Piazzi-Smyth. For something a little different after lunch we make a visit to the Edinburgh Camera Obscura. This world of illusions gives an amazing live moving panorama of the city of Edinburgh. Spy on passers-by in the street below or discover a new you in the morphing machine! (B) |

4 - Sept 21 - London and Greenwich We depart Edinburgh this morning aboard our first class rail service, to London Kings Cross. Our journey takes a few hours and we arrive in time to make an excursion to The Royal Observatory at Greenwich. This observatory, home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian line, is one of the most historically significant scientific sites in the world. It was founded by Charles II in 1675 and is by international decree the official starting point for each new day, year and millennium. The Royal Observatory is entering one of the most exciting periods in its history with a £15 million redevelopment. We stay in London for three nights giving you plenty of time to take in this exciting city. Ride on the London Eye, take in a show in London’s famous West End or enjoy a quiet ale in one of the hundreds of historic pubs that dot the city. (B) |

Day
5 - Sept 22 - Day trip to Cambridge Today we travel to nearby Cambridge. In June 1661 Sir Isaac Newton was admitted to Trinity College at Cambridge. At that time, the college's teachings were based on those of Aristotle, but Newton preferred to read the more advanced ideas of modern philosophers such as Descartes and astronomers such as Galileo, Copernicus and Kepler. There is time at your leisure to visit the Whipple Museum - featuring the Newtonian reflecting telescope. We are also able to visit the Keynes collection and view the papers of Sir Isaac Newton. For others, you may be delighted by the wonderful architecture and the magnificent perpendicular chapel, home of the world famous King's College Choir. We take time out for lunch and then continue our exploration of Cambridge and then Ely’s famous Cathedral. Marvel at the huge octagonal lantern, a vast skylight of stained glass and one of the wonders of medieval architecture. Later this afternoon we travel back to London. Dinner included at our hotel tonight. (B,D) |

Day 6 - Sept 23 - Bath and Stonehenge Today, we enjoy a visit to the Roman spa town of Bath. These are some of the best preserved Roman baths in existence. There is time at leisure for lunch and then time to occupy our minds in the Herschel Museum of Astronomy. The Herschel Museum of Astronomy is dedicated to the many achievements of early astronomer, William Herschel. It was from this house, using a telescope of his own design that the planet of Uranus was discovered in 1781. This afternoon, we continue our journey and stop to marvel at the great
and ancient stone circle of Stonehenge - one of the wonders of the ancient
world. What visitors see today are the substantial remnants of the last
in a sequence of such monuments erected between circa 3000bc and 1600bc.
Each monument was a circular structure, aligned with the rising of the
sun at the mid-summer solstice. (B) |

Day
7 - Sept 24 - The Hague Transferring to London Waterloo to board our First Class Eurostar train to Brussels. For many, this is an exciting and convenient way to traverse the English Channel. After a short stop in Brussels, we board our coach and travel to Den Haag (The Hague) in Holland. Tradition and culture meet in this relaxed and tranquil city. Home to the Dutch Royal Family and seat of government, famous for its International Peace Palace, the city of The Hague is far from sleepy. Its green stately boulevards, priceless art collections, abundance of shops and wide variety of restaurants give the city a very refined feel. The Hague is significant as it is the home to the earliest record of
the telescope: spectacle maker Hans Lipperhey presented his ‘device’
to the Stadholder at Binnenhoff, in late September 1608. This gives
us reason to celebrate the 400th birthday of the telescope with a special
dinner. (B,D) |

Day
8 - Sept 25 - Middleburg Today we take some time out from telescopes and all things astronomical and visit historic Dutch town of Middleburg, the purported birthplace of Johannes Hevelius. After the fall of Antwerp to the Spanish in 1585, which caused many of its Protestant inhabitants to flee north to the Netherlands, Middleburg grew substantially. Here we have the day to visit this lovingly restored Medieval town, whose 12th century abbey is one of the oldest in Europe. The abbey is a proud symbol of Holland’s southern Zeeland "sea land" region. We are lucky to be in town on Thursday as it’s market day. The stall holders and merchants wear traditional dress! (B) |

9 - Sept 26 - Copenhagen and Landskrona Taking a short flight from Amsterdam airport sees us arrive in Copenhagen, Denmark’s charming capital city. The Danish monarchy is the oldest in the world and Queen Margrethe ll resides right in the centre of the city at Amelienborg Palace. On arrival at Copenhagen, we transfer via the stunning 8km long Oresund
Bridge to Landskrona in the rural south of neighbouring Sweden. Up until
the mid sixteenth century, Sweden’s southern Skåne region
was a part of Denmark, including the small islands situated between
the two modern day Scandinavian neighbours. It’s a breathtaking
region, typified by rolling farmlands, and classic Swedish style farm
houses. |

10 - Sept 27 - Hven Island A full day excursion to Hven Island is scheduled for today. The astronomer Tycho Brahe lived on the then Danish island at the end of the 1500's. Afterwards we visit the famous Helsingør castle setting of Shakespeare’s
Hamlet. Located on a strategically important site commanding the Sound,
the Royal Castle of Kronberg at Helsingør is of immense symbolic
value to the Danish people and played a key role in the history of northern
Europe in the 16th-18th centuries. |

Day
11 - Sept 28 - Copenhagen Leaving Sweden this morning we travel back to Denmark to explore the delightful capital of Copenhagen. It’s a relatively compact city and many of the key sites are within easy walking distance of the ‘Strøget’ – the main shopping street that dissects the city from it’s main square, down to the harbour side docks of Nyhavn. The city has a fascinating history and is home to colourful buildings, excellent museums and galleries. Copenhagen is a vibrant, modern city whose fascinating past coexists
with the very latest trends in architecture, design and fashion. This
is after all, one of the world's great design capitals, a status that
is reflected in its dynamic new buildings and stunning shops. The Danes
are justifiably proud of many things – their beer, their ice cream,
their pastry and cheese and we recommend you try them all - but not
at once! |
